According to a Reuters report on June 8, Daimler announced that its truck division has set up an autopilot R&D center in Portland, Oregon.
The company said on the 6th that engineers at the new R&D center will use Daimler Trucks' R&D resources in Germany and India to build a global network of hundreds of experts in the field of autonomous driving. Daimler also mentioned that as of 2019, the company will invest 2.5 billion euros in research and development of the truck business, of which 500 million are used to develop commercial electric heavy trucks, interconnect technology and autonomous driving technology.
Sven Ennerst, head of truck engineering at Daimler Group, said, “The autopilot technology we are currently developing is unprecedented, and this technology can make the car safer and enhance the freight company. Work efficiency."
Martin Daum, head of Daimler's truck and bus business, said that as Europe sets stricter carbon emission standards, the company plans to increase the production scale of electric trucks. Ennis mentioned that the pure electric heavy-duty truck Mercedes-Benz eActros will begin mass production in 2021 with a cruising range of 200 km. The company will also test models such as eFuso and eCanter.
The Daimler Group plans to launch more than a dozen electric trucks worldwide, including the new eCascadia for the North American market. The new eCascadia model will compete with Tesla's semi-trailer electric trucks to compete for market share.
