Liebherr crane assists "heart surgery" of natural gas processing plant

In a company located in northern Germany, the work carried out by its LTM 1500-8.1 crane has a high degree of safety precautions. At the ExxonMobil gas processing plant in Grossenkneten, a refurbished gas torch must be erected at a height of approximately 100 meters. In addition to the large eight-axle LTM 1500 crane, two Liebherr mobile cranes are used for setting and adjustment work.

The gas processing plant is located about 40 kilometers west of Bremen and aims to purify natural gas. The safety requirements for field work at the ExxonMobil plant are very high. Under normal conditions, the assembly of gas flares supervised by Euro-Rigging can be accomplished using smaller mobile cranes. However, the 500-tonne Liebherr mobile crane is the preferred model for Klaus Flege, the project manager, due to the need to store an additional 25% of the lifting weight.

Lifting site

During the work of the crane, most of the site was closed due to safety reasons. Crane experts are very familiar with working in these unusual environments because a few weeks ago, the 45-year-old torch tubes were removed due to the need for refurbishment.

Liebherr crane

The hook height for the assembly work is approximately 100 meters. The LTM 1500-8.1 and the LTM 1250-5.1 work together to lift the 22-meter pipe from the low loader. After turning vertically and installing several components into the flare tube, the mobile crane then lifted a 16-ton load. The key point of the crane is to pass the torch tube through a narrow scaffold about 60 meters high and reach the flange below.

Safety first

The rest of the work was carried out by a team of professionals led by crane supervisor Martin Scheffler who completed the installation of all gas torches by installing 2.8 tons of torch heads.
