Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical Corporation of Japan announced on May 25 that their joint venture, Rabigh Petrochemicals, will advance the previously announced Phase II project in Shatrabee. Sumitomo Chemical stated that both parties have completed the feasibility study for the second phase of Rabigh's project and have finalized the details of each project, such as design procurement construction (EPC) contracts, project financing, and so on. The second phase of the project is expected to invest 7 billion U.S. dollars.
The Rabigh II project will expand the ethane cracker and build a new aromatic compound to produce EPDM rubber, thermoplastic polyolefins, methyl methacrylate, polymethyl methacrylate, and low density. Polyethylene, p-xylene, benzene, cumene and phenol/acetone are scheduled to be put into production in the first half of 2016.
